Xiaomi regained its crown as the largest smartphone vendor in China with 15.9% market share in the second quarter of 2015, while Huawei saw its shipments rise 48% sequentially, the fastest growing vendor in the top-10, according to Canalys. Huawei's 15.7% share leaves a very slim lead for Xiaomi.

During the second quarter, one in three smartphones shipped were from Huawei or Xiaomi, Canalys observed. Meanwhile, Apple fell to third place in the quarter, followed by Samsung and Vivo, the research firm said.

"The China smartphone market continues to mature, remaining stagnant quarter-on-quarter. Competition among major brands has never been so intense," said Jingwen Wang, analyst at Canalys.

"Huawei recorded the highest smartphone shipments in its history without compromising its product margin or profitability," Wang noted. "Apple and Samsung have both increased their sales activities in the China market, expanding rapidly in channel coverage through flagship stores and small to medium size phone retailers respectively. Xiaomi is under immense pressure to maintain its top position in the quarters to come."
